Strauss Ein Heldenleben, Op 40

Edward Gardner, Sir Charles Mackerras Chair of Conducting at the Academy and Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, returns to the Academy to conduct Richard Strauss’s ‘A Hero’s Life’. Believed to be largely autobiographical, the piece was written in 1898, marking the end of the composer’s 19th-century tone poems.

The world premiere performance of The Transparent Building by postgraduate composition student Louise Drewett opens the concert. The work was inspired by a building of the same name on the Portuguese coast, near Porto, and its surrounding landscape.
