Bach and the Creation of Modern Europe: France Image

John Butt director

JS Bach Fantasia in G, BWV 572
Delalande De profundis
JS Bach Jesu, der du meine Seele, BWV 78

For internationally engaged German musicians of the early 18th century the cultural pull of the French court was as strong as the influence of Italy, and Bach showed a lively interest in the work of his best French contemporaries. In this concert we will hear him responding to the virtuosity and sensual sonic qualities of French organ music and beginning a cantata with an opulent French court dance. Delalande’s De profundis is one of the most eloquent, vivid examples of the grand motet, as developed at the court of Louis XIV.

Performed on historical instruments.
