JS Bach
Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats, BWV 42
Prelude and Fugue in E flat, BWV 552
Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder, BWV 135

This all-Bach programme includes the Prelude and Fugue in E flat from the Clavier-Übung III – often nicknamed ‘St Anne’ owing to the similarity in melodic content to William Croft’s hymn O God, our help in ages past. Trinitarian symbolism permeates the work, with the three subjects representing the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. It is sandwiched between two sacred Leipzig cantatas: Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder, first performed in June 1724, which also focuses on the theme of the Holy Trinity, and Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats, written for the first Sunday after Easter the following year.

Performed on historical instruments.
