Lotti Crucifixus
Lassus Missa super ‘Osculetur me’ (excerpts)
Frescobaldi Fiori musicali, Op 12 (excerpts)
JS Bach Mass in G, BWV 236

Here is Bach in the context of the choicest liturgical and instrumental pieces to come out of Italy. Lotti’s Crucifixus was among the sacred Latin works Bach performed in church services in Leipzig. He much admired (and owned a copy of) Frescobaldi’s organ collection Fiori musicali (‘musical flowers’). Lassus’s Missa super ‘Osculetur me’ is typical of the ‘prima pratica’ style adopted by composers in Leipzig. Many of the principles of this style are used in the Mass in G, inspired by Bach’s study and performing experience of music by his Italian contemporaries throughout his life.

Performed on historical instruments.
