Alice Mary Smith: 'The forerunner in the race'

Ian Graham-Jones gives a fascinating insight into the life and work of Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) based on her manuscripts, held in the Academy Library, and his book about her life and work. At a time when women were thought only capable of composing songs, Smith was one of the most important and prolific English composers of orchestral pieces, chamber music and large-scale cantatas of her time. The talk will be accompanied by musical examples, performed by Academy students.
