War, Women and Song

War, Women and Song

Dr Anna Farthing created the show ‘War, Women and Song’ in 2014, drawing from previously unseen diaries belonging to several performers, as well as the published memoir of Lena Ashwell, a British actress who was the first to organise large-scale entertainment for troops at the front in the First World War. Farthing considers Ashwell’s visionary understanding of the connection between the arts and health, and discusses her own research and its application in her new role as an NHS Arts Programme Director.
