Edward Gardner conductor James Ehnes violin Orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music and The Juilliard School
Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture Britten Violin Concerto, Op 15 Stravinsky The Rite of Spring
Since 2001 the Academy and The Juilliard School in New York have collaborated on a series of major transatlantic projects, among them the co-commissioning of Kommilitonen! by Peter Maxwell Davies, concerts at the BBC Proms, Lincoln Center and Radio City Music Hall with Sir Elton John, Sir Colin Davis and John Adams, and – most recently – the Venetian Extravaganza with Reinhold Friedrich.
Stravinsky’s explosive ballet is a thrilling, virtuosic masterpiece of suppressed energy and orchestral colour. It is preceded by Tchaikovsky’s tumultuous Shakespearean fantasy and Britten’s brooding, ardent Violin Concerto, penned in America under the looming threat of war. Conducted by Edward Gardner, Sir Charles Mackerras Chair of Conducting at the Academy and Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and featuring eminent soloist James Ehnes, Visiting Professor of Violin.
